Learning to sound out words (phonics to decode words)
Developing reading fluency (read with expression & pace)
Developing comprehension by summarizing. Effective reading comprehension involves recalling key facts and retelling the story or information in our own words, focusing on clearly stated details and ideas that the author has made explicit in the text.
Developing comprehension by “making meaning.” Thinking and interpreting what might be implied while exercising critical thinking skills, i.e., generating questions, making inferences, comparing & contrasting, identifying cause & effect, etc.
Developing reading intelligence strengthens one's ability to become a lifelong learner, to cultivate a growth mindset, to nurture character virtues, and engage in community service.

Only one-third of children worldwide possess highly proficient literacy skills by Grade 4, leaving the majority at risk of enduring lifelong educational and socio-economic disadvantages.
Less than one-third of kindergarteners begin school adequately prepared to learn reading. Two-thirds lack exposure to crucial pre-literacy activities, such as being read to at home or learning the alphabet letter names and sounds.*
Only about one-third of fourth and eighth-grade students attain advanced reading proficiency. This limitation for the other two-thirds hinders their ability to comprehend and engage with the more complex texts essential for academic success in higher grades.**
Fewer than one-third of high school graduates achieve college-level reading readiness. This deficiency for the remaining two-thirds restricts their access to higher education opportunities and limits their prospects for skilled employment.***
Without effective early learning and intervention, two-thirds of children never catch up, leading to long-term educational and socio-economic disadvantages, significantly impacting future learning, career/workforce readiness, and life opportunities.

Phonics Things is an ABC book for the 21st Century. Kids learn to read and read to learn mastering “phonics 101.”
Phonics Things presents the sounds of 80 letter and letter combinations – each letter of the alphabet, the consonant blends, the consonant digraphs, the vowel digraphs, and the r-controlled vowels.
Each letter or letter combination is presented with an illustration, a silly zany poem, and a word list. It’s an indelible experience of sights and sounds.
It is important that we learn to engage in conversation, make meaning when reading, express ourselves through writing, and make a presentation to inform, educate, or entertain.
These are the pillars of literacy, which are essential for lifelong learning.
Literacy Mats delivers these pillars of literacy and core language arts academic standards in a way that takes the curriculum off the shelf and puts it in the hands of students, parents, and teachers as a shared learning tool.
With Literacy Mats, we learn to learn.
Multiplication Mats Memorized helps kids learn the concept of multiples and memorize the multiplication facts! It is a study program kids complete over the course of a year to gain a deep understanding of multiplication and to memorize the multiplication facts.
Many school systems throughout the world expect their students to memorize the multiplication facts by the end of grade 3 or grade 4. Most approaches aim to help students understand multiples and to memorize the multiplication facts.
In the United States we often challenge students to master memorization of the facts; however, we do not necessarily require it. Unfortunately, too many of our students — nearly 50% — enter grades 5 and 6 without their multiplication facts memorized. This limits a student’s ability at a time when they should be learning higher and more complex math.
Many of our social ills would lessen across one to two generations if we truly addressed our literacy crisis. Rather than 30% of kids becoming highly advanced readers, we can
develop 90% to become passionate lifelong long readers.
Brian Kissman is available for talks. He is a gifted public speaker, entertaining, and insightful for all things literacy and learning.
Parents make a huge difference. During the formative years of birth to 7 years, Moms and Dads who read to their children daily and engage their kids to learn the ABCs (letter sounds and names) before they arrive to kindergarten lay the foundation for their children’s educational success.
Brian Kissman is available for workshops. He is engaging, fun, and effective helping parents grow their kids’ educational success.
Kids love Mr. Brian. His story telling engages and entertains kids, bringing smiles and laughter.
Brian Kissman is available as a storyteller. He delights children and models a passion and love for reading.
